Monserrat shines

 

CHELMSFORD — On a day when St. John's Prep rolled to the Division 1 North sectional title, Christian Monserrat stole the spotlight.

 Monserrat not only won his fourth straight sectional title, but he captured his 200th victory and was named Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. he is now four wins shy of the Methuen scghool record of 204 wins set by John Sughrue.

Hillies reign

For a program that was all but left for dead three years ago, it's time to celebrate.
Haverhill High's wrestling team claimed the Merrimack Valley Conference small school title with a 45-33 win over Dracut.
Danny DeJesus, Reece Millington and Matt Haskell helped spark the win with victories via pin.
"Considering where we've come from, this is just huge for us," said coach Brian Urquhart. "The kids have put in the time, and it shows in the results."

Haverhill, Methuen roll

 

Haverhill and Methuen both won four meets in a multi-team meet at Haverhill. For the Rangers (19-6), Christian Monserrat remained unbeaten at 138 and Billy Wehring and Rafael Caceres was also 4-0. For the Hillies (18-6), Danny Dejesus, Reece Millington, Orlando Rojas, Jake Prescott and Jordan Faulkner were all 4-0.

In the last match of the day, with Haverhill trailing by two points, Jamal Babiker grabbed a 10-9 decision to give the Hillies a 39-33 victory over the host team and a sweep on a quad-meet that included Franklin Tech and Whittier Tech.

Heroic Hillies

 

Haverhill's wrestling team, without three of its best wrestlers (Reece Millington, Jordan Faulkner and Samie Al-Ziab), all out with injuries or illness, defeated Tewksbury 45-29. Freshman Justin Bustamante sparked the win with a first period pin in the opening match at 120 pounds and Luc Chretien had a huge win over Tewksbury standout Brock Dokos at 182.

Lawrence showed that quality yesterday with a 39-18 victory over Haverhill that completed a sweep, having also beaten Billerica (51-24) and Central Catholic (46-21), to improve to 10-4 and set up a big duel meet with Methuen on Wednesday.
