Andover falls in semis

The Andover girls tennis team's season ended in the Division 1 North semifinals with a 3-2 loss to Acton-Boxborough, the same team that beat the Warriors in the North finals last season. The doubles pairs of Annette Kim/Caroline Yang and Anna Higgins/Grace Lyons got the victories for Andover.

Rangers bow out

 

  Yarmilis Vasquez and Alexa Gatonwon atsecond doubles for the Methuen girls tennis team but the Rangers fell to powerful Lexington, 4-1, in the Division 1 North quarterfinals. On the boys side, Methuen's fine season was halted by Acton-Boxboro, 5-0.

Sachem girls roll

 

Pentucket's girls tennis team continues to play its best at the most opportune time, blanking Bishop Fenwick 5-0 in the Division 3 North quarterfinals.

For the second straigght tournament matchup, singles players Olivia Colby, Maggie Aulson and Parker Greason won their matches in straight sets. The Sachems will now face unbeaten Wayland at a time and date to be determined.

Knights sweep to quarters

Nicole Fischer swept her match at third singles (6-0, 6-0) to help lift the North Andover girls tennis team to a 5-0 win over Malden in the first round of the Division 1 North tournament. The No. 9 Knights have a quick turnaround and will play at top-seeded Andover in Wednesday's quarterfinals (3:30 p.m.). The Warriors won both matchups in the regular season 5-0.

Sachems stun Lynnfield

 

Pentucket's girls won every singles match and shocked Lynnfield in the Dicvision 3 North first round, 3-2. Olivia Colby, Maggie Aulson and Parker Greason all won in straight sets for the Sachems.

Pinkerton boys, Windham girls lose heartbreakers

It was a tough day for our local New Hampshire tennis teams. The Pinkerton boys team lost to Hanover, 5-4, in the Division 1 semifinals, and likewise the Windham girls team lost by the same 5-4 margain to Portsmouth in the Division 2 semis.

With a 4-1 victory over Billerica, the Methuen girls tennis team qualified for the state tournament. Katelyn Wojtowicz, Emily Rowe and Abby Poulin won at singles, while the duo of Yarmilis Vasquez and Alexa Gaton won at doubles.

Julia Webster came back from being down 2-5 to win her match, 8-6, to help North Andover girls tennis top Haverhill, 4-1. The win qualified the Knights (9-5) for the state tournament.

Pelham grabs first win

In its last match of the season, the Pelham girls tennis team snatched its first win of the campaign, beating Pembroke, 6-3. Sasha Burke, Payton Hamlin, Ruby Day and Sarra Catizone were winners at singles, and teams of Burke/Hamlin and Day/Catizone won at doubles to clinch the victory.

The highlight of a girls tennis match between Central Catholic and Methuen was a battle at second singles between Methuen's Katelyn Wojtowicz and Central's Kasey Jackson, which Wojtowicz won, 6-7, (7-9), 6-2, 7-5. Central still won the match, 3-2.

The North Andover girls tennis team got a comeback win from Ally Maher at second singles (3-6, 6-4, 6-1), and Julia Webster held on for a three-set win at first singles (6-4, 1-6, 6-3) in a 3-2 win over Tewksbury. The first doubles team of Lizzie Lynch and Chiara Trafton had the Knights' third win (6-2, 6-1).

Maher sparks Knights

North Andover senior Ally Maher's win in a marathon match from the No. 2 slot helped propel the Knights to a victory over Central Catholic, as she rebounded from a first-set loss, winning sets two and three, 7-6 (7-2) and 6-4. North Andover sophomore Nicole Fischer won, 6-0, 6-3, at third singles, while the Raiders' Fiona Waters took first singles, 7-5, 6-1.

For a time, it seemed as if Andover was on the verge of stealing momentum with the Division 1 North title on the line.

With the Golden Warriors trailing 1-0, the team of Elia Petros and Anna Higgins stormed to a dominant victory at No. 2 doubles, handing their teammates a spark and sending fans into massive cheers.
