Sometimes, even in wrestling, the best offense is a good defense.

Lawrence showed that quality yesterday with a 39-18 victory over Haverhill that completed a sweep, having also beaten Billerica (51-24) and Central Catholic (46-21), to improve to 10-4 and set up a big duel meet with Methuen on Wednesday.

Starting at 170 against a Haverhill team that had just nipped Billerica (42-40) and defeated Central (41-33), the Lancers faced the meat of the Hillies' lineup from the start. And, while Steven Toro, Oscar Mejia and Andy Delacruz all lost, they stayed off their backs and avoided six-point losses to Haverhill standouts Jomar Cannon, Luc Chretien and Jordan Faulkner, and Faulkner had to work hard for an 8-7 decision.

Samie Al-Ziab got a fall for the Hillies at 220, but that was Haverhill's only pin of the day.

Meanwhile, in a battle of two of the region's top 132-pounders, Lawrence's Anfernee Green took a defensive approach to hold off Haverhill's Reece Millington, 9-8.

"That (avoiding pins) was really important," agreed Lawrence coach Rob Niceforo, who was missing two of his usual starters. "I'm really proud of the way my kids wrestled today."

For Haverhill, Cannon, Chretien, Faulkner, Al-Ziab and Orlando Rojas (138) were all 3-0 on the day and those five plus Millington and 152-pounder Jamal Babiker had  pins against Billerica. With Jake Prescott staying off his back at 145, that sealed the victory.

Jack Kiely was 3-0 on the day for Central, which is still missing talented but banged-up sophomore Brandon Desfosses.
