Monserrat shines

CHELMSFORD — On a day when St. John's Prep rolled to the Division 1 North sectional title, Christian Monserrat stole the spotlight.

 Monserrat not only won his fourth straight sectional title, but he captured his 200th victory and was named Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. he is now four wins shy of the Methuen scghool record of 204 wins set by John Sughrue.

Following St. John's Prep (231 1/2) in the standings were runner-up Chelmsford (202 1/2), Shawsheen (185 1/2) and Lawrence (172). Methuen came in sixth and Haverhill was eighth.

Although the local teams did not finish as high as they would have liked, it was an excellent day for a number of individuals.

Methuen had a second champion in 113-pounder Billy Wehring and two seconds. Dan Aziz continued his fine late-season wrestling, finishing second at 160, and Mike Golio was runner-up at 220.

lawrence had a fine day overall and also had two individuals crowned in Anfernee Greenn (132) and heavyweight Alex Lopez, while Manny Arias (126), Oscar Mejia (182) and Andy Delacruz all took third.

The hero of the day for Haverhill was 182-pounder Luc Chretien, who avenged an earlier loss to Lowell's Malik Settles by dominating him with a 13-5 major decision in the finals. He had advanced with three pins.

Two impressive thirds for the Hillies were recorded by Reece Millington (132) and Orlando Rojas (138).

For Andover, Tyler Ferrisadvanced to next week's state meet at lawrence by placing fourth at 126.

St. John's Prep was paced by three champions — Hunter Costa at 126, Jared Costa at 145 and North Andover's Ian Butterbrodt at 220.  Butterbrodt, a returning New England finalist, is now 51-0 for the season.
