PEABODY | A goaltender's save percentage drops dramatically when a state tournament game extends to a penalty kick shootout, but Greater Lowell coach Dan Kane liked his team's odds against Hamilton-Wenham last night when their Division 3 North semifinal game was still tied through two overtimes.

The Hamilton-Wenham boys soccer team showed host Boston International yesterday just how deep and talented their offensive arsenal is.

The Generals got goals from four different players and assists from three others as they prevailed, 4-1, in a Division 3 North quarterfinal game in Boston.

When his team started the season a less than impressive 1-2-1, Hamilton-Wenham boys soccer coach Matt Gauron didn't panic. His patience paid off, as the Generals went on to win 10 of their next 12 including their sixth straight, 1-0, over Ipswich yesterday.

Junior Joe Savasta scored the game-winning goal with just more than 10 minutes left to lift the Generals to victory. Jackson MacDonald made just two saves to earn the shutout for the Generals (7-4-1).

Behind two goals from Ian McCraken, Hamilton-Wenham improved to 4-2-1 with a win over Amesbury, 4-1. Jackson MacDonald made five saves in net for Hamilton-Wenham.

Hamilton-Wenham picked up a 2-1 win over North Andover. Joe Savasta and John Britton scored for the Generals, who got a solid performance from Jackson MacDonald in net.

BOXFORD | The Masconomet boys' soccer team has taken on some tough teams in the early going | yet is still unbeaten. Yesterday afternoon, behind a pair of goals from senior captain Kevin VanLenten, the Chieftains methodically handled visiting Hamilton-Wenham, 3-0, in their first Cape Ann League contest of the season.

In a thrilling second half that featured four goals, Hamilton-Wenham was able to hold off a strong Ipswich comeback effort, winning the game 3-2. John Britton had two assists for the Generals in the win, and Wes Evans scored one of the two Tiger goals.

Each team scored a first half goal as host Hamilton-Wenham and North Reading tied 1-1. The Generals (0-0-1) goal was scored by Jesse McElvain, who knocked in a corner kick from Joe Savasta. Hamilton-Wenham goalie Dan Congdon made four saves. Generals stopper Shawn Tucker and Pat Ford also played well on defense.
