Matthews' career day paces Sanborn

On day rainy day made for running backs, Zach Matthews delivered the game of his life.

The Sanborn senior exploded for a stunning 215 yards on just 14 carries, scoring three times and leading Sanborn to a 35-13 domination of ConVal on Saturday.

"Zach was excellent today," said Indians coach John Welch. "He ran hard, had some great holes and just did a terrific job."

The 6-foot, 190-pound fullback used his power and speed to run through the competition. He broke a 40-yard touchdown run in the first, scored from 26 yards out in the second and closed out the scoring with a 10-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

He also caught two passes for a team-high 25 yards and continued to lead the defense from his linebacker position.

"Zach did it all," said Welch After contact he kept his legs going, he got the tough yards and, as always, he was huge on defense."

The Indians had plenty of stars in a dominant defensive effort, holding ConVal off the scoreboard until the backups entered the game in the fourth.

Ryan Rose wreaked havoc in the Cougars' backfield, earning three sacks on the day. When ConVal was able to get a pass off, the Indians' defensive backs were often there, with Cam MacNeil, Hunter Jenkins and Mike D’Amelio each earning an interception.

"The defense played extremely well," said Welch. "Multiple guys were getting to the ball, Rose and Kyle Storms did a great job containing the quarterback. It was a great overall effort."

Windham rolls to another lopsided win

WINDHAM — The Windham Jaguars continued their scorching start of the season, defeating Sanborn 47-12. In front of a crowd of over 1,000 fans, Windham put 40 points on the board for the fourth straight game and are showing no signs of slowing down.

“We have different guys that can get the job done. Every week somebody else has stepped up,” said Windham head coach Bill Raycraft. “This week it was Kurtis Jolicoeur, last week it was Matt Shea. Every week we have an answer for what the defenses are showing us.”

In last week’s road victory over John Stark Regional, it was junior Matt Shea who led the Jaguars in rushing with 119 yards. This week, it was senior Kurtis Jolicoeur’s turn to lead the way, tallying up 99 yards. Shea’s biggest play on the night was a nifty 45-yard interception that he returned for a touchdown in the third quarter. He also added another score on the ground.

It was Sanborn that got on the board first in this one, orchestrating a time consuming touchdown drive late in the first quarter. Windham quickly answered following a kickoff return by Kellin Bail that landed the Jaguars inside the five-yard-line of Sanborn. Shane Lafond promptly scored from one yard out a few plays later.

The Jaguars caught Sanborn off guard on the ensuing kickoff, recovering an onside kick just prior to the end of the first quarter. Windham capitalized on the aggressive tactic, driving down the field and setting up a nine yard run from Shea.

“We want to force teams to defend us every play and every minute,” said Raycraft. “Regardless of where we are on the field, we are going to focus on getting the ball back.

“Every time we go on the field for a kickoff, we want the other team to be scared, said Jolicoeur, who also added a rushing touchdown and a two-point conversion. “We don’t ever want them ever to feel comfortable and we don’t want them ever to cheer about anything.”

Windham’s offense has been clicking all season. They have scored 194 points in just four weeks, including a 56-point win opening night at Hollis-Brookline.

“Everything has been great right now. Everyone’s getting carries, everyone’s getting yards and the line is just opening up holes for us,” said Jolicoeur.

Windham will travel to Souhegan next week, and Sanborn will host Conval next Saturday.
