In just his second game for Lawrence High, Jose Abreu finished a home run short of the cycle, driving in four runs to help Lawrence to its first win of the season, 7-0 over Haverhill.
"We're four games in and didn't have a win yet," said Lancers coach Brendan Neilon. "So people start to doubt themselves at 0-3. We were excited to get this win."
Abreu, a transfer from Greater Lawrence that had to sit out the first two games of the season, was 3 for 4 on the day with the single, double and triple. The left fielder did not have a hit in his first Lancer start.
Starter Joan Vargas also recorded a career-first, scoring his first varsity victory. The sophomore allowed just two hits and strick out six in six innings.
Designated hitter David Quezada added a key night, going 2 for 4 with two RBIs.
"Vargas was really the story of the game," said Neilon. "They guys were excited about this win. We thought it was going to be a little earlier. We need to win as a team this season."
