North Andover overcomes offensive shortfall

LAWRENCE — North Andover has discovered how to win baseball games with less, but it’s not something the Scarlet Knights want to make a habit of. After all, the postseason isn’t the time to be hunting for an offense. Three days after defeating Masconomet despite being held hitless, North Andover claimed a 6-2 decision over the host Lancers on a mere four hits in last night’s Lawrence Invitational Tournament semifinal.

Paul Trabucco fired a four-hitter with eight strikeouts, Andrew Breen laced two two-run singles and rightfielder Matt McDermott made two fine over-the-shoulder catches as Central Catholic dumped Lawrence 7-1.

Lawrence's Elvis Batista led off the seventh with a walk, stole second and took third base and home on passed balls for the unlikely winning run in a 5-4 Lancers walkoff victory over Dracut. David Quezada added a home run and Sam Quirzo earned his first varsity victory.

14 K's for Johnian

Andover's Andrew Johnian allowed just a single hit and struck out a stunning 14 batters, carrying a perfect game into the fifth and not walking a single batter, as the Golden Warriors beat Lawrence 5-0. "Johnian was just awesome," said Lawrence coach Brendan Neilon. Adam Risman led the Warrior offense with two RBIs.

Hillies on Firek

For the second time this year, Haverhill's Stas Firek smacked a two-run home run. Unlike the first, this one — a sixth-inning bomb to left-center — made a winner out the Hillies, 4-3, over Lawrence. Brendon Bretton earned the win on the mound for Haverhill.

Chelmsford 3, Lawrence 2, 8 innings

Sophomore Joan Vargas threw a brilliant, eight-inning game for Lawrence but lost a tough-luck 3-2 decision to Chelmsford. The visitors scored the eventual winning run on two errors and a balk, while the Lancers loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the frame but couldn't push a run across.

Joan Vargas hurled 7 innings, giving up two earned runs on two walks and three hits while striking out four batters. He led Lawrence baseball to an 8-2 victory over Tewksbury.

Duran earns first varsity victory

Reynaldo Duran wasn't stellar but he pitched well enough to lead Lawrence to a 7-5 victory over Methuen. Duran earned his first varsity win, hurling seven innings and giving up five earned runs on five hits and five walks while striking out one. Lawrence trailed 4-2 after three and a half innings, but Edison Urena's two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the fourth tied the game. Joshua Casado stroked a two-run double in the fifth inning to help Lawrence score three times in the fifth inning and take a 7-4 lead.
