The North Reading volleyball team, seeded 10th, used balance to upend No. 1 seed Greater Lawrence in the Division 2 North quarterfinals.

"The best thing we did was spread it out to a lot of hitters," said North Reading coach Mike Milone, whose club will play in the semifinals tomorrow at Melrose. "We were really balanced and I think that made it difficult for them."

Emily Murray, Danielle Peach and Kat Mazzone all had nine kills for the Hornets (11-8) and Mazzone had three aces among her 11 service points. Sarah Murray had 15 kills.

"They're a good team and they set up (Trudy) Goetchius a lot," said Milone. "She hit it from all over the court, but we played good defense."

With Goetchius recording 21 kills and eight blocks, Greater Lawrence ended a fine season with a 20-2 record.
