SWAMPSCOTT | There's no question about it: the Swampscott girls soccer team is not only a second half squad, but an upset-minded one, too.

The host Big Blue staged a second half rally yesterdy to defeat Northeastern Conference rival Danvers, 2-1. In the process, they qualified for state tournament play.

PEABODY | In the biggest upset of the season, the Swampscott girls soccer team came into Peabody and out-slugged the previously undefeated Tanners, 5-3, yesterday afternoon in a game the hosts played without head coach Lori Escolas, who resigned on Tuesday.

With her team trailing by a goal late in the second half, Swampscott girls soccer player Erin Langan made the most of the opportunity she was given.

With 10 minutes to play, Langan stepped into the box for a crucial penalty kick and buried it in the top right corner of the net, lifting the Big Blue to a 2-2 tie with host St. Mary's of Lynn.

Gloucester managed just four shots on goal in a 4-0 loss to Swampscott.

In an entertaining match between Swampscott and Winthrop, the Big Blue saw their 2-1 half lead evaporate as Winthrop went up 3-2 in the second half. However, Janelle Mazzaferro's second goal of the match tied the score in dramatic fashion with only seven seconds left to earn the tie 3-3. Skylar Sabbag also scored for Swampscott.

DANVERS | It may have been the first game of the 2007 season for both teams, but it's always a big game when Danvers and Swampscott meet in girls soccer.

Danvers and Swampscott are two teams that traditionally battle it out for the top spot in the Northeastern Conference. The past two years they have finished first and second, respectively, and both were looking to gain an edge by winning that first meeting last night.
