With her team trailing by a goal late in the second half, Swampscott girls soccer player Erin Langan made the most of the opportunity she was given.
With 10 minutes to play, Langan stepped into the box for a crucial penalty kick and buried it in the top right corner of the net, lifting the Big Blue to a 2-2 tie with host St. Mary's of Lynn.
"Marissa (Gambale) got taken down in the box and we had Erin take the shot because she's pretty automatic," said Swampscott head coach Fred Day. "She's very confident with her shooting." The host Spartans jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Amanda Webster buried the first two shots of the game. The Big Blue were undaunted, though, with Gambale scoring early in the second half to draw the squad within striking distance for Langan's tally.
"It was a really good effort," Day said. "When we were down, we picked it up and really took it to them in the second half."
