Merrimack College freshman goaltender Joe Cannatawas named the Hockey East  Rookie of the Week. Cannata stopped 35 shots last Friday, leading the Warriors to a 3-2 upset victory over fifth-ranked Vermomt.

This is the third time Cannata has received a weekly honor this season by Hockey East.

Merrimack (7-18-3, 3-16-2 HE) hosts Providence College Saturday at 7 p.m. at Lawler Arena, before visiting the Friars Sunday at 4 p.m. in a game that will be televised by ESPNU.

North Reading 3, Amesbury 2

Amesbury battled to the end, but could not overcome the two-goal advantage North Reading built in the second period. Where the Hornets stung the Indians was on the power play converting two goals on only four times on the man-up whereas Amesbury did not convert on any power plays.

North Reading 2, Amesbury 0

 

In a close matchup with North Reading, Amesbury lacked an emotional spark despite doing many good things on the ice in a 2-0 loss, according to coach Peter Cignetti. Matt Irwin made 29 saves and Cignetti additionally gave praise to Bill Enaire, Zach Pizzo, and Jacob Burns for good performances.

Amesbury 5, Triton 4

Trailing 4-3 with under a minute-and-a-half to play, Amesbury pulled its goalie and the move paid off as the Indians tied the score on Cody Trottier's first goal of the night. However, the forward was not done and with three seconds left Trottier found the net for a second inside a minute to give his Amesbury team the win, 5-4.

Hyman's heroics

Jack Hyman racked up a ridiculous five points (three goals, two assists) in the North Andover boys hockey team's 7-0 romp over Amesbury. The Ryans (Gillespie and Sifferlen) added a goal and an assist each, and Mike Levy and Ryan Aresnault rounded out the Knights' scoring. Ryan Whyte finished with 14 saves in the shutout.
