GEORGETOWN — Winning is all about timing, and unfortunately for the No. 16 seed Georgetown, yesterday’s 5-3 loss to the No. 25 seed Weston was the result of a half-inning of counter-clockwise play.

Tied 1-1 entering the top of the seventh in their Division 3 North quarterfinal game, the Wildcats loaded the bases with one out and used admirable plate-patience to score four decisive runs.

Late-game heroics have been a recurring theme of late for the Wildcats, who improved to 9-12. Two days ago, they came from behind to beat Tyngsboro 5-4 in the final inning.

Georgetown junior ace Sarah Erlandson had been cruising — collecting seven strikeouts in the first three innings.

However, in the fourth, Weston used two hits, a walk and a hit batter to tie it at 1-1.

Erlandson then stranded the bases loaded with a strikeout and a pop-up.

Trouble struck again in the seventh.

Sarah Ober’s single was followed by a pair of passed balls that allowed her to scoot to third. After a walk, Sami Gosman’s bunt froze the Georgetown infield as Ober idled between third and home, and the visitors had the bases loaded. Tanner Skenderian walked on four pitches and Ober strolled home for the go-ahead run.

Consecutive Georgetown fielding and throwing errors made it 4-1 Weston.

Erlandson (12 Ks) recorded the second out on an infield pop-up, but Jessilee Gross’ hit to left pushed the fifth run home. Cally O’Connor saved another run as Bernstein was caught skidding between home and third.

Georgetown (14-9) wasn’t going down without a fight.

Kassie Barba reached on an error and Tori Newbury singled. With one out and runners on second and third, Mel Prior’s sacrifice fly drove in Barba.

“I think playoff experience plays a huge role with us. This is important for this team to go three games deep,” said Royals coach Julie Lamoly, whose team has continued to improve since 2008’s 0-16 season. “It was an amazing first six innings, and the seventh was just a hard one to take.”
