GEORGETOWN — Ordinarily, winning a lopsided tournament opener like this, 21-2 over Madison Park yesterday afternoon in the Division 3 North preliminary round, is not much of a benefit. After all, it’s no way to keep your skills sharp for the more competitive games coming up.
But this is no ordinary Georgetown team. In fact, it’s the first one since 2005 to even qualify for the tournament. For that reason, Royals coach Julie Lamoly preferred to look at the upside of the romp, which advances Georgetown to a first-round matchup at 4 p.m. tomorrow at No. 1 O’Bryant (14-2), which also plays in the historically weak Boston City League.
“This has got to help with the girls’ confidence,” said Lamoly. “They’ve never been here before — I’m sure they were nervous — and now they know what they can do.”
All-conference junior pitcher Sarah Erlandson, who struck out nine batters and walked one in three innings of no-hit ball before yielding to younger sister Jane, admitted that she had a case of the nerves prior to the game.
“Definitely, I was nervous,” said Erlandson. “Just that it’s the tournament and you never know how good they’ll be. I felt a lot better after the first inning.”
That was understandable. Erlandson struck out the side in the first, on 14 pitches, leaving one Madison Park player mumbling as she returned to the bench that “she is way too fast.”
The Royals, meanwhile, put the game out of reach by scoring eight runs in the bottom of the first. Leadoff batter Amy Cronin (3 for 4, 3 runs scored, 3 RBIs) started the inning by reaching on a bunt single and she capped the inning off with a two-run homer to left-center field.
The second inning was more of the same and then some as the Royals sent 18 batters to the plate and scored 12 runs. Hannah Birnie (3 for 3, 3 runs scored, 3 RBIs) and Lauren Kalfin both had two hits in the inning and Sarah Erlandson belted a three-run homer to left field.
Ahead 21-0 after the third, Lamoly cleared the bench. Jane Erlandson pitched the fourth and fifth, allowing two runs on two hits.
