Phillips Academy’s Andy Cline has been a part of many landmark events in his time as the head coach of the varsity baseball team, and yesterday he reached another.

With an 11-0 win over Brooks, Cline registered the 300th victory of his career. As usual, he was modest about the accomplishment.

“I’m very fortunate to have had a lot of wonderful kids play on teams that I’ve been associated with,” said Cline, who coached four years in Ohio at Berea High School before coming to Phillips Academy. “I just enjoy being out there with them.”

First-year assistant Kevin Graber is a bit more willing to heap praise on Cline for reaching the lofty milestone.

“I’ve been around the game, even managing in pro ball before coming (to Phillips), and I spent the last five seasons (as an assistant coach) at Amherst College — I guess you could say I’m accustomed to being around guys like Andy Cline,” Graber said via e-mail. “In my first year here, I’m super-impressed. Coach Cline is an excellent, beloved coach. It’s not hard to see why he’s had so much success.”

Cline concluded, “I’m just lucky to be out there with some good kids, and I have a lot of them in the past, as well as my assistant coaches. They’re all fantastic and I’m very lucky to have them.”

In the past two seasons, the Big Blue have won back-to-back Central New England Prep championships (though Cline was on sabbatical for the 2007 season) and throughout Cline’s tenure, the school has been crowned champs seven times.

With the win over Brooks, the Big Blue is 8-2 this spring. That gives Cline a 245-134-1 record in 23 years at Phillips.
