ANDOVER — Quarterback Dan Hussey marched his team on a game-winning 71-yard drive in the final stages of yesterday’s showdown with Deerfield and cashed in for a 14-7 win.
Hussey (7 for 13, 117 yards) hit Sam Auffant on a 14-yard touchdown pass with just over two minutes to go, for the game winner. That touchdown came in response to Deerfield’s game-tying TD minutes earlier.
“We knew, coming in, that Deerfield is a great team,” said Phillips head coach Leon Modeste. “To get great you have to beat greatness and that is what we did today.”
But defeating Deerfield (4-2) did not come easy for Phillips (5-1). The Big Blue took a 7-0 lead when Hussey went in from 11 yards out.
Eddie Houghton led Phillips with 106 yards and Auffant added 56.
Louis Jacoubs had nine tackles and Zach Boyd added eight.
Phillips travels to Assumption College next Saturday, against Worcester Academy.
