Even as just a near upset, its a game that will shock the prep basketball world. Phillips Academy threw a mighty scare into Tilton, the No. 4 team in the country in the SI.com/5-Star poll, before falling 66-62. Haverhill's Ryan Hartung scored 16 points and Brendan O'Connell of Andover had 14 points, and the two combined for seven 3-pointers. Haverhill's Tom Palleschi added 12 points (he now has 997 for his career) and eight rebounds for the Big Blue.
Iowa State-bound Georges Niang of Methuen had 18 for Tilton, which has at least five big-time college players including 6-10 junior Nerlens Noel, who might be the best player in the country.
"The kids played out of their minds," said Big Blue coach Leon Modeste. "To win would have been unheard of. I'm happy for my kids."
