After starting the season on the JV squad, Alberto Abreu is making his mark at the varsity level.

Pinch hitting in a pressure-packed situation with two outs in the top of the seventh inning, the Lawrence junior delivered an RBI double to tie the score with Dracut and send the game to extra innings.

The Lancers exploded for four runs in the eighth to take their second straight extra-inning encounter, 8-4.

"We lost one of our catchers and brought him up," Lawrence head coach Brendan Neilon said of Abreu, who got his first varsity hit and RBI with one blow. "So far, so good."

In the extra frame, Edwin Brito (four hits with three doubles, two RBIs) had a key two-bagger and Victor Mendez followed with a two-run homer.

Mendez, who went the distance in a gutty mound performance, set up his offensive heroics by shaking off a late Dracut challenge in the bottom of the seventh. After allowing a leadoff triple, Mendez intentionally walked the next two batters to load the bases, then followed with two of his 14 strikeouts bookending a line-out to escape the inning scoreless.
