Masconomet defeated North Andover, 2-0, in girls soccer.8 Photos

Needing a win to clinch a share of the Cape Ann League crown, Masconomet wasted no time putting the pressure on, handing co-champ North Andover its first league loss of the year, 2-0. Amy White opened the scoring just 4:30 into the game and Lucy Gildein added a goal in the second half to deliver the goods for the Chieftains (14-1-2, 11-0-2 CAL).

Newburyport girls unable to climb CAL standings

The Clippers played what coach Robb Gonnam believes to be their best half of the season en route to taking a 1-0 lead into the break against Masconomet. Jillian Kinter scored the lone Clippers' goal at 16:19. Unfortunately, the home team came out of the break a step behind and Masco's Ashley McKinley made the Clippers pay with a goal in the 55th minute.

Annie Burns recorded her fifth shutout of the season as Masconomet downed Manchester Essex 7-0.

Ashley McKenelley scored twice and had an assist and Blaire Shrewsbury dished out two helpers as the Chieftans (7-1, 5-0 CAL) remained unbeaten in league action.

Masco in need of a break out game

The Masconomet Lady Chieftans are 4-1, but coach Paula Yanakakis is still concerned about the lack of production. "Our goalie, (junior) Annie Burns, has been outstanding; she had 12 saves in a 1-0 win over (arch rival) North Andover last week. We've been outshooting our opponents, but only clicking for one or two goals. Hopefully we'll break out soon. I think we need a 5-6 goal game to get us going," Yanakakis said.
