MANCHESTER, N.H. — Salem suffered from a role reversal last night in the opening round of the Class L tournament.

Having lived a healthy existence for years on their outside shooting, the No. 9-seed Blue Devils not only turned cold, but they fell victim to the 3-point shooting of No. 8 Manchester Memorial.

Alex LaRosa pumped in 14 fourth-quarter points including six late free throws as Salem held off Exeter, 58-54. LaRosa had another monster game with 34 points while Joe Gallant (ankle) came off the injured list to notch a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Cannone, Salem topple unbeaten Merrimack

Salem stunned previously unbeaten Merrimack, 56-55, as Matthew Cannone drilled a foul-line jumper with three seconds remaining. Merrimack (now 10-1 in Class L) scored with 16 seconds left to make it 55-54. Joe Gallant was double teamed and passed the ball to Cannone, who found nothing but net. Gallant was immense with 14 points and 16 rebounds. The win was Salem's third straight and the first game of the streak was a similarly dramatic buzzer-beater over previously unbeaten Bishop Guertin.
