Iwanicki, Prep finish on top

 

METHUEN — St. John's Prep's Rawson Iwanicki of Andover is one very confident freshman, so much so that some might call him cocky.

But that would be a mistake because Iwanicki, as he showed Saturday at the Division 1 North sectional, has good reason to be confident. By defeating Lawrence's talented John Vasquez 8-3 in the finals, Iwanicki improved to his season record to a sterling 45-2.

Reversal for Warriors

Andover got quick revenge for its loss Saturday in the finals of the Hillie duals, tripping Lawrence 40-30. That gave the Warriors (21-3) a school record 21 wins and clinched a tie for the MVC Division 2 title. Key wins for the Warriors were by Theo Krueger at 126, Connor Sheehan at 182 and heavyweight AJ Heidtke who avenged a personal loss with a 10-0 major decision.

Cordero sparks Rangers

 

Xavier Cordero battled back from an early deficit to grab a 7-3 decision at 132 pounds to help spark Methuen to a hard fought 39-36 win over Lawrence. Heavyweigh Corey Bard had a key pin for the Rangers (19-3) as well.

 Sophomore Angel Miranda had a pin at 170 pounds to highlight Lawrence's 43-18 victory over North Andover. Also, John Vasquez remained unbeaten at 145 for the Lancers with a first-period pin.

Vasquez still unbeaten

 

Lawrence senior John Vasquez won twice at 145 pounds and once at 138 to remain unbeaten on the year in a quad-meet at Braintree in which the Lancers won once of three meets. Luis Mauticio (106) and Eric Sanchez (195/220) were also 3-0 on the day.

Young Lawrence club steps up

 

Lawrence arguably had its best day of the season, winning a quad-meet  at Billerica with one of the wins a 37-35 shocker over Central Catholic.

John Vasquez was unbeaten on the day and decided the Central meet with a 3-1 decision over Nate Vachon in the last match of the day while sophomore heavyweight Joel Baretto had a pin in the last match of the day to seal a 41-35 win over Billerica.Jaycob Zapata wrestled well and was 3-0 at 113.op

Central rolls along

 

Unbeaten Central Catholic improved to 10-0 with four wins and, said coach Jamie Durkin, "it's the best we've looked all year." One of the wins was 41-33 over a strong Shawsheen team.

Lawrence takes 2nd

 

Lawrence has been struggling in dual meets thus far, but it made a huge statement Friday by placing second at the Framingham Tournament.

West Springfield was the impressive champion with 225 points but the Lancers were next in the 23-team field with 165. Methuen placed 11th.

Lancers survive threat

 

Lawrence's wrestling team held off improving Whittier 45-36 as part of a tri-meet as heavyweight Brandon Lavasta clinched the win with a 2-0 decision. Also, sophomore Davison Theosmy had a key pin at 138 while trailing 6-0. Both teams defeated Masconomet.
