North Reading's defense stiffened in the second half Saturday in the Division 3 North girls soccer finals but by then it was too late as the Horbnets fell to Lynnfield 3-1. Marissa Zarella scored North reading's lone goal on an assist from Tori Brown and Katerina Hassapis made 6 saves.

With just 15 seconds left in double-overtime, Tori Brown took the ball down field and fired a pass to Marissa Zarella, who made a move and scored to give No. 9 North Reading a 1-0 upset of top-seeded Newburyport in the Division 3 North quarterfinal.

Sydney Goodwin scored the first goal of the game but North Reading took over after that and beat Greater Lawrence 5-1 in first round girls soccer tourney action. Venecia Perez led the Reggies' defense and Serena Torres made 22 saves. Rachel Hill and Jessica Muise had two goals each in the win.

Tori Brown scored her second goal of the game with two minutes left as North Reading girls soccer beat Masconomet 2-1, completing a rare season sweep of the Chieftains.

Marissa Varella netted both goals to lead North Reading girls soccer 2-0 over Pentucket.

Varella, just a sophomore, has scored three of the Hornets' four goals this season.
