Wildcats fall in finals

In its seventh straight appearance in the Division 3 North finals, St. Mary's of Lynn got nine hits, five runs scored and seven RBIs from its first four hitters to down upstart Whittier, 7-3. Josie Sanchez lashed a two-run double in the sixth inning to keep the Wildcats competitive. Destiny Jordan ripped a leadoff double and came home on Cassey Glode's ground out to open the scoring for Whittier (18-7).

Wildcats battle back

After battling back from a pair of deficits, one as large as three runs, Whittier rode Destiny Jordan's sixth-inning RBI single to a 5-4 victory over Winthrop in the Division 3 North semifinals at UMass Lowell. The Wildcats will take on St. Mary's of Lynn in the sectional final Sunday at Martin Field in Lowell.

Whittier history

It was coach Cheryl Begin's 100th win (100-66) and she won't soon forget the 3-2 win over Mt. Alvernia. It punched the Cats' ticket to the North semifinals, a first since The Eagle-Tribune began keeping complete records in 1988.

Riley Whittier advance over Royals

 
Kayla Riley carried a no-hitter into the seventh for Whittier Tech and the Wildcats held off a late Georgetown charge, 5-2, in the Division 3 North softball sectional first-round matchup.
 
The win was the second in as many days for the Cats, who look to make in 3 for 3 today in the North quarters at Mount Alvernia, 4 p.m.
 
Riley finished with a snappy three-hitter, striking out five.
 
Offensively, Dominique Ortiz put the Cats on the board in the first with an RBI triple. She and Josie Sanchez popped two-run hits as Whittier broke it open with two outs in the top of the seventh.
 
Shannon O'Brien, Jennifer Nutter and Ali Newbury had hits in the bottom half of the frame to get the Royals on the scoreboard.

Hitting Wildcats

 

As it has most of the year, the Whittier softball team relied on its bats to win its Division 3 North preliminary game, 14-10 over Watertown. The Wildcats (15-6), who are at Georgetown this afternoon, scored in every one of the first five innings. Nina Moszka had three hits, two RBIs and scored twice and Cassey Glode had a solo home run and four RBIs.

Josie Sanchez hit a home run for the second straight game, giving her five for the year, as Whittier whipped Northeast 12-1 for its 12th win of the year. Sanchez had three hits overall, scored three times and had four RBIs. Destiny Jordan also had a home runand eight players had at least two hits.
