CAMBRIDGE | The Peabody High football team isn't only looking for its first win of the Dick Woodbury Era | they're still looking for their first points.

Hitting the road for the first time this season, the Tanners and their new head coach travelled to Cambridge and, for the second straight week, were held off the scoreboard in falling to the host Falcons, 36-0.

Peabody’s senior football center, Anthony Panopoulos. suffered a broken back on the fourth play of his team’s 44-0 opening night loss to St. John’s Prep.

Panopoulos will face at least a year of rehabilitation, head coach Dick Woodbury said.

Peabody rolled past Salem 3-1. Erika Digiacomo and sister-duo Emily and Alyssa Manoogian scored for the Tanners. Tending net for the Witches was Kristin Wyke, who stopped 11 shots.

Jamie Hanson scored Salem's lone goal in an attempt to rally a second half comeback, but Peabody held on for the win.

Stan McKeen, the Peabody High boys' coach who just notched his 100th career victory, attended Lynn English at a time when the school didn't have soccer.

Nor was he too crazy about the sport when his wife Sharon suggested they take first son Timmy to start soccer at an early age.

Erika Digiacomo spent her sophomore year for the Peabody High girls soccer team as a forward partner of superstar graduate Justine Hartigan. She would make crossing passes to Hartigan that usually ended up in the net.

Erika Digiacomo recorded a hat trick and added an assist, while Alyssa Manoogian scored and assisted on all three Digiacomo goals, and Peabody beat Beverly 4-0. Amy Perkins made five saves to earn the clean sheet, while Haley Lorge made five saves in the loss.

PEABODY | The beginning of the Dick Woodbury era in Peabody didn't go as planned last night. The crowd was large and enthusiastic for the first Arthur Adamopoulos Football Classic in memory of the late Tanner coach, who was at the helm for 20 years. The Eagles spoiled the party by scoring on seven of their first eight possessions and rolled to a 44-0 win.

The talk surrounding the Peabody High football team throughout the offseason has been unusually positive for a team that suffered one of its most disappointing seasons in program history last fall.

The hiring of Peabody High teacher Dick Woodbury | after the resignation of two-year coach Paul Uva last winter | was met with immediate excitement, mainly because the 62-year-old math teacher had the backing of the players. Woodbury's decision to assemble a coaching staff built entirely with former Peabody coaches and players only solidified the sentiment of joy.

Peabody High School athletic director Phil Sheridan stood outside the McVann-O'Keefe Rink one night last winter and watched a slightly chaotic scene as the parking lot was overflowing with cars for a Peabody-Beverly hockey game. "The police came to me and said, 'There are too many cars here. We're going to have to get extra policemen (for traffic flow),'" Sheridan recalled.
