Methuen senior John Sughrue didn't get the match he would have preferred, but he had plenty of consolation yesterday at the Methuen Invitational.

Because he moved up a weight class to 130 pounds this year, there was no showdown with Salem star Trevor Dearden, but both Sughrue and Dearden came away big winners.

Call it redemption. The Salem High girls basketball team suffered a one-point loss at the buzzer in Waltham Thursday night, but reloaded behind Ashley White (22 points, three 3s), Louie Rijo and Karly Henderson (15 each) to handle the Hawks, 66-46, on Salem's home floor last night.

Greater Boston League champion Waltham struck for the only goal in the second half and ousted Masconomet, 3-2, in Division 2 North state tournament action.

Kelly Gibson, who wears No. 17, scored her 17th goal and collected her 17th assist for Masconomet (13-5-2). Janey Diamond notched her 18th goal for the other Cheiftains' score and picked up her 10th assist.

Courtney Nicolo was a shot-stopping machine for Bishop Fenwick making 13 saves, but unfortunately the only one that slipped by was good enough for a 1-0 Waltham win.
