Shkliew, Walsh pull North Andover back to break even

NORTH ANDOVER — Bubba Shkliew went into intermission a bit dazed and confused, but fortunately he'd already done his share of damage to the visitors.

The North Andover junior recorded a first-quarter touchdown reception and a second-quarter safety, providing the Scarlet Knights a lead they never relinquished en route to a 16-14 victory over Lynn classical last night.

Hillies in a breeze

 

Haverhill's volleyball team had no trouble with Lynn Classical in the Division 1 North quarterfinals, blasting Lynn Classical 25-9, 25-8, 25-13 to improve to 17-3. Abigail Sonugu led the way at the net with 18 kills while Haley DeRoche added nine kills and had 18 digs. The Hillies will have a harder time tomorrow when they play at No. 1 seed Pabody at 7 p.m.

Hillies win thriller

 

Haverhill's girls soccer team won its first-ever tournament in wild fashion, scoring with 45 seconds left for a 4-3 win over Lynn Classical. Kerrin Thomas scored the game winner for the Hillies (13-1-4) on an assist from Ashley Onofaro, who had a goal and two assists. Haverhill hosts Acton-Boxboro at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Knotted 2-2 in the seventh with Lynn Classical, North Reading erupted for four runs to capture the title in the Nipper Clancy Tournament at Fraser Field in Lynn yesterday. Gritty sophomore Keith Linnane drew a bases-loaded walk to break the tie, and Kyle Boucher added the insurance by smoking a two-run single to power the Hornets in the seventh. Junior Ryan McAuliffe moved to 7-2 on the year with the complete-game win, striking out nine and walking nobody in the five-hitter.

Knights roll in league opener

NORTH ANDOVER — The Scarlet Knights found the first six points difficult to come by last night. The following 36, however, came much easier.

Quarterback Brandon Walsh had a nearly perfect first half and the Knights came within 1:54 of posting their third consecutive shutout as North Andover routed Lynn Classical 42-6 in the Cape Ann/Northeastern League Division 1 opener for both teams.
