For a moment, Pentucket coach Christian Langlois tried to subdue his team's wild celebration.
"I couldn't tell if the referee had called it a goal or offsides," he said. "All the guys ran onto the field, and I was telling them to come back. Then I realized it was a goal. It was awesome."
Paxton Stedler's highlight-reel goal in double overtime gave the No. 9 Sachems a 3-2 victory over No. 8 Lynn Classical in the first round of the Division 2 North tournament. This marked the first tourney victory for the Sachems since the 2006 season.
"They tried to clear the ball out but it went to Zack Chapman," said Langlois. "Zach has such a strong leg, and he booted it over the entire defense to Paxton. He took it to the near end and squeezed the ball in between the goalie and the post. This game was tough on the nerves, but great."
Stedler scored twice on the day and Will Craig tied the game with 11 minutes to go in regulation for the Sachems, who will play on Wednesday against the winner of tomorrow's Danvers/Beford clash.
