Janey Diamond added the third tally with an assist from Carrie Turner while Krista Wibra played well in the defensive end for Masco (8-2-1).

Masconomet football coach Jim Pugh moved to Massachusetts in 1973, but he could never abandon his New York roots.

Pugh, 57, grew up on Long Island and played football and basketball at Chaminade High School in Elmont, N.Y., where he was the All-Long Island quarterback his senior year (1967). He earned a basketball scholarship to Hoftstra University, where he also played football.

"We're picking up steam all the time," Masconomet boys soccer coaching legend Lene Emmons said, recapping a 7-0-1 start. "Kevin Van Lenten at center midfield and our stopper, Ian Gelinas, have been solid on defense. Tyler Bodengraven's return from a groin pull has made us a much better team.

Masconomet improved 5-1 and goalkeeper Annie Burns picked up her third shutout of the year as the Chieftans blanked Ipswich 4-0. Cait Clark netted two goals for Masconomet and Jamie Wright added two assists.

Andrew Morency sat in the Donaldson Field stands on Sunday and watched the Masconomet football team dismantle a very good Bishop Fenwick club.

Before Morency had even made it to his car in the parking lot after the Chieftains' 35-14 victory, he was already thinking of ways to make sure his Hamilton-Wenham Generals weren't Masconomet's next victim.

The Masconomet Lady Chieftans are 4-1, but coach Paula Yanakakis is still concerned about the lack of production. "Our goalie, (junior) Annie Burns, has been outstanding; she had 12 saves in a 1-0 win over (arch rival) North Andover last week. We've been outshooting our opponents, but only clicking for one or two goals. Hopefully we'll break out soon. I think we need a 5-6 goal game to get us going," Yanakakis said.

Masconomet took it to a tough Lynnfield squad, beating the Pioneers 5-1. Jamey Diamond had two goals for the Chieftains and Brittany Fraser had a goal and two assists.

Cara Connors and Ashley McKennelly scored for Masconomet, which rode a three-save effort from Annie Burns to a 2-0 win over Triton.
