SALEM — Certainly a historic way to kick off a hockey program.
Hitting the ice for the first time as a varsity entity, and with only one senior on the roster, Windham-Pelham took on Pembroke-Campbell and easily prevailed, 7-0, last night at the Icenter.
Despite the victory, head coach Doug Watson didn't feel the score portrayed how close the contest was.
"Certainly, the score doesn't really reflect this game," Watson said. "They were formidable and never gave up, they were relentless."
Luckily, senior Caitlin Re was between the pipes in the Windham net as she turned aside 12 shots for the shutout including a third-period breakaway attempt.
"She shut them right down," Watson said. "Both our girls (Re and junior Shyra Oker-Teed, who had an assist) had excellent games."
Re got plenty of help in strong defensive efforts from Oker-Teed, juniors Corey Alberico and Nick Neary along with sophomore Artoom Aristov.
Offensively, junior Alec Paradis' two goals highlighted a four-goal Windham first-period explosion that put the game away quickly. Paradis also had a pair of assists while junior Nick Morin added two goals and an assist.
Goals: Alec Paradis 2, Nick Morin 2, Matt Merchel, Dustin Lubinger, Colin Begin
Assists: Korey Lubinger 2, Paradis 2, Morin, Porter Carelli, Steven Barton, Shyra Oker-Teed, D. Lubinger
Saves: W — Caitlin Re 12; P — Nick Berube 34
