North Andover was fast out of the blocks, and had enough to hang on.

The No. 9 Scarlet Knights flew out to a seven-goal lead in the first half, and finished off a 9-4 victory over No. 24 Sandwich in the preliminary round of the Division 2 East tourney.

North Andover next travel to face No. 8 Winchester in the first round tomorrow. The Knights downed Winchester 5-2 in their regular season meeting.

"We played a perfect first half (last night)," said North Andover coach Steve Connolly. "The offense moved the ball well and we took advantage. They scored three quick goals to start the second half, but then we broke through with another."

Tommy O'Connell paced the Scarlet Knights with three goals, giving him 26 for the season, while Tyler Morandi scored twice and Alex Blane scored one goal and assisted on another.

The defense exceled, led by the likes of Zac Iovanella (assist), Bobby Berman (goal), John Boyle and Shane Wescott. Goalie Brien O'Connor turned in 11 saves for the winners.

"The entire defense played very well," said Connolly. "And so did O'Connor. It was an impressive performance for the guys."
