Despite missing six players with the flu, including five starters, Methuen's girls soccer team (8-6-1) defeated Somerville 2-0 to qualify for the state tournament for the first time in nine years.
After a scoreless first half, senior Aja Rademacher came off the bench to score her first varsity goal on a rebound. Karen Lima also scored and Alex Levesque had two assists. Rebecca Caterino got the shutout in goal and is 5-0 since returning from a case of monnucleosis.
"The girls were definitely excited, even the girls who couldn't play who were there bundled under blankets," said Methuen coach Peter Kitsos.
