GEORGETOWN — Georgetown has more than enough talent, speed and strength to contend in the Cape Ann League Small division. But three games deep, the Royals sit with an unlikely 0-1-2 record.
Yesterday Hamilton-Wenham (1-1), a CAL Small rival, bolted to a 3-0 halftime lead and strolled away with a 3-2 victory."We're not touching the ball, and we're not making the extra effort and getting to the right spots," said Georgetown coach Nichole Turcotte. "We need to work on our positioning in front of the circle, because we definitely have the talent and skill. As you could see, we're down there more than enough, we just need to capitalize and work on getting the ball in, and I think most of that has to do with positioning."
Hamilton-Wenham sophomore Julia Dolan found senior Katie Kerrigan for the game's first tally at the 20:24 mark.Georgetown appeared to rebound quickly, however, pushing hard into Generals zoning. The Royals battled hard enough to earn three straight penalty corners in between a Hamilton-Wenham save but were still unable to convert.
The Generals surged back, and following a Nikkie Perakis save — one of her 11 — Hamilton-Wenham earned another penalty corner and once again made true.
With 50 seconds left in the half, Lauren St. Pierre netted a backbreaking goal.
Down 3-0 at halftime, the Royals needed a dramatic comeback.
Early in the second half, Perakis made three straight saves and the Royals soon caught fire
With 9:10 gone, junior Lauren Hanlon found senior Tracy Sinkewicz for Georgetown's initial goal, cutting the Generals lead to 3-1.
The Royals punched in their second goal when sophomore Sara Gaeta set up senior Kim Nowers. With three minutes left, the Royals needed to act fast, and with less than a minute remaining, the game-tying goal suddenly seemed a grand possibility when Georgetown pushed the numbers on a manic fast break.
The lead pass was a bit too far, and the Hamilton-Wenham goaltender wisely kicked away any chance of a tie.
