HAVERHILL — Cold, soggy weather and a slew of young starters wreaked havoc on the Haverhill, which fell to Malden 33-12.
The Hillies, which graduated over half of their starters from last season including quarterback Isiah Ocasio and running backs Danny Triplett and Noel Figuero, managed only 119 yards of total offense and turned the ball over three times.
“It might as well have been a shutout, because we didn’t do anything on offense,” said Haverhill head coach Tim Briggs. “We didn’t have any plays, we didn’t block – we didn’t run our offense.”
Sophomore quarterback Connor Tufts got the start for Haverhill, but was picked off on the second drive of the game, which Malden defensive back Shakarus Semexant returned 52 yards for a touchdown.
From there, Malden began to put up points in a hurry.
Haverhill got on the board with 2:09 left in the third when Joshua Hicks picked off a pass and ran it 33 yards for a score. Tim Nutter came on at quarterback in the fourth quarter for the Hillies and added a second score on a 1-yard run. But that would be the limit of the Haverhill offense. Malcolm Novello led the Haverhill with two catches for 69 yards.
