NORTH ANDOVER — The Triton football team may have been punished last evening for something Newburyport did last week.
North Andover, one week after being upset by the Clippers, took out its frustration on the visiting Vikings en route to a 35-8 victory at Joe Walsh Stadium.
Triton (5-3 overall, 0-2 in Cape Ann League Large) dropped its third straight game after starting the season with five straight wins. Now at 6-2, the Scarlet Knights have scored 28 or more points in five of its last six games.
North Andover’s 21-0 halftime lead was built on three pass interceptions that the offense converted into points. The lead held up over a second half that saw many Scarlet Knights reserves receive playing time.
Once again, the Scarlet Knights produced a well-rounded attack. The pitch-and-catch tandem of quarterback Brandon Walsh (9 of 14, 165 yards and a touchdown) and receiver Jon Swanton (7 catches for 124 yards and a TD) excelled, while tailback Zac Iovanella (17 carries, 139 yards, 3 TDs) was his usual productive self.
"I thought we played well,” North Andover head coach John Rafferty said. “We didn’t play perfectly, but we had a tough opponent. I have great respect for Triton. They always have tough kids.”
The league’s leading rusher, Triton’s Brendan O’Neil, was held to 71 yards, 46 of those coming after the Scarlet Knights’ three-touchdown lead.
“We’re beat up because we have a couple guys with the flu,” Viking head coach Jim O’Leary said. “We were undermanned, but they were better than us.”
Last year’s Vikings closed the season with losses in their last five games after winning four of their first six.
