GLOUCESTER | Throughout the summer and the preseason, the Gloucester High School football team heard all the rumors that they would be the team to beat in the Northeastern Conference this fall.
The Fishermen had their first real chance to validate those rumors last night in front of a packed house at Gloucester's Newell Stadium in the season opener against two-time defending NEC champion Winthrop.
In the end it was evident that Gloucester is every bit as good as the prognosticators suspected, at least for this week. The Fishermen rolled to a 34-14 victory over the Vikings to start the season at 1-0.
Gloucester built a 28-7 lead by halftime, with its first touchdown coming 7:10 into the first quarter on a 35-yard run by senior captain Andrew Fulford. The 5-foot-9, 170-pound running back erupted for 137 yards on just eight carries in the game.
The Fishermen scored again on the second play of the second quarter when senior running back Anthony Enderle (six rushes, 80 yards) scored on a 49-yard run. The 255-pound bruising back had taken a 55-yard run to the house on the previous play, but the score was nullified for holding.
Kicker John Celata's extra points on both touchdowns were good and Fulford scored again with 7:00 left in the second quarter, but Celata missed the extra point, giving Gloucester a 20-0 lead.
Winthrop finally got on the scoreboard midway through the second quarter on a 60-yard run by junior Chris Beranger, but Gloucester came back with another touchdown with just 12 seconds left in the half. Junior Taylor Burbine took an end-around in from five yards out.
The second half was quieter than the first, with both teams staying out of the end zone until Winthrop sophomore quarterback William Milano found Beranger for a 45-yard touchdown pass on the last play of the third quarter. That cut the deficit to 28-14.
However, Fulford added his third TD of the day in the fourth quarter on an 18-yard run to put the game on ice.
