Weisman slays Valentino's Chieftains

NORTH ANDOVER — All those wins, all those years of service and North Andover High treats Mike Valentino just like any other Chieftain.

Valentino, the former Knight diamond great and assistant coach, now in his first year at the helm of rival Masconomet Regional, saw his new club take one on the chin, 8-3, yesterday in the early season Cape Ann League Large showdown.

“They beat us three times last year, knocked us out of the tournament,” said Knight lefty Mike Weisman, who allowed just four hits and struck out nine in five sharp frames. “I played tight end in football, and they kicked our butts there, too. So this one feels pretty good.”

The sophomore southpaw earned his second win of the year for the 3-1 Knights, who bounced back nicely from a Thursday thumping by North Reading.

“We didn’t come to play, and North Reading hit us hard,” said Weisman, now leading the region with 19 strikeouts in 13 innings of work. “I was pretty confident I could do well. I threw all my pitches and was able to get out of trouble when I had to.”

Weisman also delivered a pair of hits, including a two-run single in the crucial four-run third, to backbone a 10-hit North Andover charge.

Paul Pollano, Nick Waszczuk and Juan Areces all had a pair of hits, while freshman Brandon Walsh smacked a run-producing triple to deep center in the fifth.

Aaron Brunette came on to pitch the final two frames for the Knights, allowing one run while being victimized by a pair of infield hits.
