MEDFORD | Haverhill's Thane Sanford broke for his outside linebacker position to knocked down a pass on a two-point conversion attempt with under three minutes remaining to secure Phillips Academy's 21-20 victory over the Tufts JV team yesterday.
"I was very proud of the kids," said coach Leon Modeste. "Tufts is the kind of school our guys want to go to. It was a great victory for us."
Former Phillips Academy star Bryan Farris continued his stellar play for the Big Blue. The 2006 Eagle-Tribune All-Star was 15-of-25 passing for 309 yards and three touchdowns. This after opening his Phillips career by passing for 253 yards a week ago.
On the first play of the game, Farris hit Ryan McCarthy on a 70-yard score. He then connected with McCarthy on a 33-yard touchdown early in the second quarter, and finished off the scoring with a 28-yard TD to Luke Dupery in the third. He also completed seven passes for 67 yards to Mike Cuimmei and kicked three extra points.
"Farris just did everything he is supposed to do," said Modeste. "He did a great job."
Sanford, a former Whittier standout, tied for second on the team with five tackles. Dan Evans led the way with 13 stops
