Cushing spoiled Phillips Academy's season opener, beating them 61-53 and sending the Big Blue to an 0-1 start to the 2008-09 season.
Said coach Leon Modeste, "It was a physical game and we just didn't execute. We have to allow less second-chance shots."
Brian Russell, sidelined for most of last season after undergoing heart surgery, led the way in the loss, tallying 13 points. The Big Blue had two more scorers in double digits: Tom Palleschi (12 points) and Adam Skaggs (10 points, two 3-pointers).
Phillips was outworked in the foul department as Cushing hit 15 freebies compared to only five for the home team.
