After flying out to a quick lead on three Casey Anderson goals, Haverhill's soccer team was being challenged. Dracut responded with a pair of goals wrapped around the halftime break and, more importantly, netminder Christina Gould's gallant attempt to play with a strained back eventually forced the junior to the bench.
But the Hillies had an ace in the hole in freshman Meghan Gulbrandsen, who stepped into the breach and shut down the Middies to preserve a 3-2 victory.
"Meghan's a very valuable part of our center midfield already as a sub and we use her regularly," Haverhill coach Fred Tarbox said. "In the preseason, the girls told me she was a very good goalie as well, so we worked with her in practice and she proved she's very good. It's hard because we hate to lose her in the field, but she's solid in net."
With Gould visiting the doctor today, Gulbrandsen will start for the Hillies against Billerica.
