LITCHFIELD, N.H. — Fresh off an undefeated season, Pelham looked poised to start another run of similar magnitude yesterday as they beat up the Campbell Cougars 34-7.

Chief among the day’s contributors was senior standout Bruce Vieira. The Division 5 champion Pythons’ workhorse got it done on offense (16 carries, 175 yards and 3 touchdowns), special teams (76 return yards between kickoffs and punts) and defense, where he chipped in a sack and a handful of tackles at linebacker.

Vieira looked especially impressive while putting the Pythons up for good on a 50-yard touchdown run at the end of the first quarter following a Campbell penalty that extended the drive with time expired.

Still, coach Tom Babaian saw room for improvement for the versatile back.

“I don’t think he had a good game, he really didn’t,” commented Babaian. “He can play much better. He’s part of that whole team that just didn’t play well today. (Campbell) started playing poorly, then we started playing poorly instead of stepping it up,” Babaian explained. “I wasn’t very pleased with our performance overall.”

While Vieira was shredding the Division 6 Cougars on the ground, junior quarterback Joshua Luciano was getting it done through the air.

Luciano capped a 12-play, six-minute drive with a 25-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Michael Lombard with 3:18 to play in the first quarter.

With the Cougars’ defensive line down a pair of starters due to injury, the Pythons often employed the no-huddle to take advantage of the overmatched Campbell defense.

“It wasn’t part of the game plan, it was something we adjusted to on-the-fly,” said Babaian.

Defensively, Pelham gave up a 59-yard touchdown pass from the athletic Kiel Canada to Zachary Laganiere at the 0:19 mark in the first, but rebounded to force a pair of fumbles throughout the rest of the game.
