In their own special ways, Amanda Saab and Becca Weiss are making their marks on this year's undefeated Salem volleyball squad.
A shutout defeat of Bishop Guertin highlights the role of each. Saab, as befitting a returning Eagle-Tribune All-Star, made her presence felt with a team-high seven kills and five blocks. Weiss, a three-year starter and two-time state champ along with Saab, had a more subtle impact but just as effective with 17 service points, 5 aces, 5 kills and 14 digs.
"When Amanda hits the ball, the whole place knows it," head coach Dan Young explained. "But then you look back at the scorebook at the end and say, 'Wow, Becca's ahead'."
Growing into her role as one of her team's leaders has been somewhat of a challenge but Weiss is adjusting well. "Her first couple of games had been rough but she's accepting the leadership role well," Young said. "I'd expect her numbers to grow as the season goes on."
