Diaz fuels Reggies to big win

WAKEFIELD — You could call Saturday the breakout party for Shamil Diaz.

The 5-foot-8, 160-pound junior rushed for 131 yards on just five carries with two long touchdowns to help Greater Lawrence earn a 29-28 win over Northeast. 

Trailing 28-21 heading into the fourth quarter, the Reggies (3-2) scored when senior quarterback Jose Caceres hit Donnie Croteau for a 62-yard bomb with 9:57 left. The Reggies went for two, and took the lead for good when Caceres hit Diaz on the conversion.

Greater Lawrence made two fourth-down stops in the fourth quarter. The Reggies got the ball with four minutes left and were able to run out the rest of the clock for the win.

Northeast (3-2) took a 22-7 lead into the half, but Diaz broke off runs of 51 and 55 yards in the third quarter to swing momentum. Caceres finished his day 10 of 15 passing for 191 yards and two touchdowns. 

Greater Lawrence will host Mystic Valley Friday at 5 p.m.
