MANCHESTER — A week ago, Pinkerton coach Mike Clark stated his goal for Saturday;s Division 1 meet at Derryfield Park.
"With the ypimng team that I have, I'd be ecstatic if we could finish second in that field," said Clark. "Nobody is going to beat Concord."
Well, Clark was a happy coach Saturday as the Astros finished second with 89 points, nipping Londonderry by just two points. As expected, Concord blistered the field, taking the top three places and six of the top 15 to finish with an impressive 28 points.
Hard charging Londonderry freshman Will Heenan was was top local finisher, taking sixth overall in 16:39.2 on the demanding 5K course in his first race there, but he was followed by four Astros before Londonderry could get in its second man.
Joe Gagnon led Pinkerton, placing right behind Heenan in seventh in 16:41.5 while sophomore Nathan Steiger, junior Jeff Mize and sophomore Nolan Preble finished in a pack at 16-17-18. Junior Steven Groulx completed the Astros' scoring, taking 31st.
For Londonderry, seniors Nathan Seeley and Jeff Cieslikoswski were 19th and 21st respectively and freshman Ryan Young and Matt Griffin were right behinf in 22nd and 23rd.
Timberlane's Jacob Huberdeau was 27th and Salem's Sean Holden came in 36th.
Sanborn 6th in D2
Sanborn's cross country team continued to impress late in the season, placing sixth in the Division 2 meet to advance to next week's Meet of Champions. Freshmen Dylan Khalil and Owen Stocker led the Indians, placing 21st and 25th respectively.
Windham placed eighth but the Jaguars had the top local individual in the meet as senior Spenser Sawyer had the race of his life to take third overall in 16:41.4, just a second beind the runner-up.
