MALDEN — In a rough season for Lawrence, junior Miguel Camacho has emerged as a bright spot.
Lawrence failed to get its first win, losing 22-13 to Malden, but the Lancers may have found an answer to their quarterback carousel.
Camacho ran for 120 yards on 21 carries and a touchdown and also threw for another score. But perhaps Camacho’s best play came on special teams, when he showed tremendous speed sprinting around defenders and catching the Malden kick returner from behind after a minimal gain.
“We made some personnel adjustments during the season but Miguel played very well today,” said Lawrence head coach Mike Yameen. “We had some problems moving the ball in the second half, but he was very effective running the ball for us.”
Defensively, the Lancers forced four turnovers, one on a nice interception by Ruben Morillo. Another promising junior, the 5-8, 155-pound Morillo also had some nice tackles on much bigger Malden receivers from his defensive back position.
“He’s a really good receiver with some great speed,” said Yameen. “He had a good game today.”
Malden (3-5) scored first when quarterback Jared Martino found Marlon Cook for a 66-yard catch and run in the second quarter. Lawrence responded with a 10-play, 80-yard drive that ended with Camacho finding Andre Wilson in the corner of the end zone on a 6-yard pass.
Morillo came up with his interception on Malden’s ensuing drive, and Camacho proceeded to break off a 65-yard touchdown run on the first play to give the Lancers a 13-7 lead. Malden recorded a safety on a failed two-point conversion try, returning an interception 99 yards to make it 13-9 at the half.
Martino ran for a 1-yard score early in the third, and then added a 7-yard run with under 10 seconds left in the fourth to close out the game. But Lawrence had negative 7 yards total in the second half.
“In the second half, we just had too many breakdowns,” said Yameen. “The whole second half was played in our side of the field. They turned the ball over but we couldn’t capitalize. Our guys showed fight though and that’s all you can ask for.”
