Sliney and Samuel shine at All-States

WESTFIELD — There were plenty of fine performances at the Mass. All-State Track Championships.

There were two champions as of press time late Saturday night (several events were incomplete): Pentucket senior three-sport star Noah Malhi uncorked a big 158-11 in the discus, surpassing his own school record and moving to 11th on the area’s all-time list.

North Andover junior Erick Duffy added to his impressive resume with the pole vault crown with a 15-0 clearance. Last week he set the state all-time record of 16-0.25.

Earlier in the week, North Reading’s Julia Valenti with a 12-4 with teammate Rachel High second (10-6) while Haverhill’s Michaela Sliney was fifth in the pentathlon.

Lawrence’s Fabian Tineo placed second in the 400-hurdles in 55.88, just off his area-leading time.

North Andover scholar-athlete Matthew Manteiga grabbed a third in the long jump with a 21-8.25, adding a quarter-inch to his previous area-leading jump of the spring.

Methuen’s superb senior Wileshka Samuel had another big day with thirds in the 200 (25.06) and 100 (12.34).

In the boys’ 200, Andover’s Raymond Gorzela the sixth qualifier with a 22.39.

Senior George Papoulis beat the ancient Haverhill record last week. He just missed doing it again with a sixth in 1:54.44. Andover sophomore Devin Connell took eight (1:55.23).

Andover continued its high hurdles tradition with Justin Mantrana grabbing third in 15.08.
