NORTH READING — The North Reading high school baseball team stayed perfect on the season with a 6-4 win over the Hamilton Wenham Generals.

A big fifth inning was the catalyst for the Hornets in the win, as Tyler Calos knocked in a two with a single and later stole home, followed by Pat Driscoll’s RBI base hit. The four run inning broke a 2-2 tie that the Generals had created in the fourth after stealing home twice.

“I thought we had a good approach at the plate in that [fifth] inning,” said Hornets head coach Eric Archambault. “We weren’t going to give in at the plate and we were going to make them throw strikes. We wanted to make them play defense and put the ball in play to do what we could. We weren’t having a great hitting day, but we were able to come through when we needed to.”

The Hornets were also aided in the victory by the performance of their pitcher, Mike McCauley. McCauley threw 108 pitches in the complete-game effort. He finished the game with two strikeouts and four walks on the day.

“[McCauley] pitched really well,” said Archambault. “This was probably our worst defensive effort of the entire season, so he had to battle through that and it takes a lot to overcome that adversity. I’m really proud of him.”The North Reading high school baseball team stayed perfect on the season with a 6-4 win over the Hamilton Wenham Generals.
