Allie Sirmaian had no idea what the commotion was about.
With about 15 seconds left in the Salem High girls basketball game against Winnacunnet, she scored a hoop, her 20th and 21st points of the night. Then she heard a roar throughout Salem’s Davis Gym.
As it turns out, that pull-up jump shot gave the 5-6 senior guard 1,000 points exactly for her career.
“I had no idea,” said Sirmaian, a four-year starter who is averaging 17.2 points a game this winter. “All of a sudden, I heard screaming from my mom (Stacy Sirmaian) and they held up a banner. I was in shock. I just kept smiling. My mom was crying. It’s an honor.”
The two proudest in the gym were her parents, Stacy and Steve, but also bursting with pride was her coach.
Salem coach Michaela Galvin raved about Sirmaian, an Eagle-Tribune All-Star in field hockey and basketball.
“Just as a person, she’s the most hard working and humble and good person,” said Galvin after the 57-43 loss. “Her teammates are really lucky to have her. They and I have a huge amount of respect for her. She’s a great teammate and a great captain. She really deserves it.”
Sirmaian is in select company. She’s only the third official member of the Salem girls 1,000-point club.
Hall of Famer Sharon Playdon Wheeler (Class of ‘80) had approximately 1,200 points before going onto an all-star career at Springfield College. Becky Valenti (SHS ‘00), who earned a scholarship to Division 1 St. Bonaventure, scored 1,086 points with the Blue Devils.
If you include her freshman year at Notre Dame of Tyngsboro, Hall of Famer Katie Qualter Pudil (SHS ‘93) would also be over 1,000.
Sirmaian has time to add to her mark. The Blue Devils have three more regular season games then the postseason.  Sirmaian, who hopes to become a physical therapist, may play basketball at St. Joseph’s of Maine or attend UNH and not play sports.
