Senior Fabian Vasquez played in his first varsity game and it was a dandy.

No-hitter, 10 strikeouts, three walks in Lawrence's 6-0 season-opening win over Malden.

"I think this is the first no-hitter we've had since I've been coaching," said 12th-year coach Brendan Neilon.

He's had some elite arms, too, with Mike Calzetta, Victor Mendez, Yunior Vazquez and Joan Vargas at the top of the list.

 "Give him credit, it's been a rough winter and spring," said Neilon. "We went back and forth as a staff to take him out. But he can talk about this for the rest of his life. He felt good and didn't have a high pitch count."

Neilon said he couldn't pitch varsity last year due to some problems with his paperwork. 

Darluigi Gonzalez was the offensive star with two hits and two runs.
