Phillips Academy senior Tim Wynter swam 49.09 in the 100 backstroke preliminaries at the Eastern Swimming and Diving Championships yesterday to break a 17-year meet record in the event.
Wynter then swam a new record time of 49.08 during the finals to win the 100 backstroke. He was the lone swimmer to earn a new meet record time.
Andover took fifth place overall as a team at the championship meet, which was in its 114th year.
If Andover had won the final event, the 400 freestyle relay, it would have finished third. But the relay team of Joe Faller, Scott Simpson, Michael Camarda and Wynter finished second in 3:05.37.
