Greater Lawrence didn't have any choice so it showed its depth yesterday while capturing the Wakefield Tournament.

Despite missing four starters, including standouts Miguel Guzman and Victor Sosa, the Reggies powered their way to 191 points in the 16-team field, far ahead of runner-up Reading 150 1/2, which barely nipped Methuen 149.

Finishing first for the Reggies were impressive unbeaten freshman Matt Buco at 103, Franchesco Ortiz at 125, Saul Orellana 135 and Chris DelaRosa at 160. Finishing second were Brian Rivera 152 and heavyweight Chris Sharpe, who was unseeded but knocked off the No. 1 seed and lost an overtime decision in the finals.

"It's a credit to the character of the kids that they wrestled so well under tough conditions," said Greater Lawrence coach Tony Sarkis.

For Methuen, standout senior John Sughrue was first at 130 and was named Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament, nipping out teammate and 145-pound champion Andrik Cruz (three pins and a technical fall) for the honor. Also placing first was Kevin Sughrue at 140 and 215-pounder Steve Saba (four pins), both of whom are off to a great start to the season.

Pentucket finished 12th led by Ben Stasiuk, who was third at 189. Standout lightweight Andy Lane was injured in his first match and was taken to the hospital.
